During his career as an emergency medicine physician in the United States Navy, Dr. Darling was personally responsible for the medical needs of the President, Vice President, and a number of other senior government officials. Dr. Darling also previously served as Director of the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and Director of the Navy Medicine Office of Homeland Security at the Headquarters of the Navy Surgeon General in Washington, DC.
