Mickey M. Nelson is a Partner at Command Group and an expert on the subjects of protective security, contingency and emergency planning for senior officials and executives, and special operations. A twenty-eight-year veteran of the United States Secret Service (USSS), Mr. Nelson designs, implements, and manages custom security and safety solutions for Command’s corporate, head of state, and ultra-high-net-worth individual and family clients.
Prior to joining Command, Mr. Nelson spent the majority of his career in operational and management roles in the USSS’s protective division, which is tasked with the critical mission of securing the President of the United States and other government officials of strategic national importance. Mr. Nelson is a leading expert in the employment of tactical, counterassault, and counter-sniper capabilities in head of state protective missions and has extensive protective experience in various international assignments, including supervision of covert Presidential travel to war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Most recently, Mr. Nelson served as Assistant Director of the Secret Service in the Office of Protective Operations, where he led the policy development and execution of the USSS protective mission. He was responsible for the oversight of the Presidential, Vice Presidential, and Dignitary Protective Divisions. In this position, Mr. Nelson oversaw all aspects of policy formulation, budgeting, manpower and resource allocation, and the development of the standard operating procedures behind the protective methodology for the principals under the USSS’s protection. Mr. Nelson was also responsible for security planning for all National Special Security Events (NSSE) and USSS tactical and special operations programs during his time in office.
In 2009, Mr. Nelson was chosen by the Secretary of Homeland Security to serve as the Principal Federal Official for the historic 2009 Presidential Inauguration and pre-Inauguration events, which were designated as National Special Security Events. In that role, Mr. Nelson was the lead federal official for coordinating incident management, overseeing resource allocation, and ensuring the seamless integration of federal support for Inaugural activities.
Prior to his assignment as Assistant Director of Protective Operations, Mr. Nelson served as Assistant Director for the Office of Government and Public Affairs, where he oversaw USSS liaison activities in interactions with the United States Congress, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and other agencies, as well as with members of the media and general public.
Previously, Mr. Nelson served as Deputy Special Agent in Charge of the USSS Presidential Protective Division. In this role, Mr. Nelson managed the day-to-day protective operations for the President, first family, and the White House Complex, and collaborated with White House staff and other government officials on the selection of presidential foreign travel sites and the security of the President while traveling overseas.
Mr. Nelson has also served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Special Operations Division, where he led a complete restructuring and operational integration of tactical resources supporting the Service’s protective mission and the President’s protective detail.
