There is, however, a growing realization of costly delays associated with truck transportation across the region which include poor road conditions, crime, and less efficient border crossings. As a result, an improved rail transport system is being increasingly recognized as a more efficient alternative, and therefore a more worthwhile investment of resources. Taking notice are investment firms from around the world, funding current and planned infrastructure projects which will enhance the rail transport system throughout Central, North, and South America. A key stakeholder in this process is Kansas City Southern Railroad, operator of the Panama Railroad, which co-owns the rails that currently join industrial centers throughout North America.
